New to flag football? You’re in the right place. Below are answers to the most common questions first-time parents have — don’t worry, we’ve got you every step of the way.

❓ Is flag football safe for my child?

Yes. Flag football is a non-contact version of football that emphasizes speed, agility, and skill over physical contact. There is no tackling, and all games are officiated by trained referees who enforce age-appropriate rules to keep players safe.

❓ My child has never played football before. Can they still join?

Absolutely. Many Desert Blaze athletes are first-time players. Our league is designed to teach fundamentals in a positive, encouraging environment — whether your child is brand new or already experienced.

❓ How are players placed on teams?

Players are grouped by age division to ensure fair, balanced play. Our goal is to create teams where athletes can grow, learn, and compete comfortably at their level.

❓ How long is the season?

Seasons typically include multiple regular-season games followed by end-of-season play off. Specific season dates and schedules are shared well in advance so families can plan accordingly. Check the Registration tab for specific season dates and locations.

❓ How often are practices and games?

• Practices are usually held 1-2 times per week

 • Games are typically played on Friday evenings

Exact days and times vary and are communicated before the season begins.

❓ What equipment does my child need?

Players should bring:

 • Athletic clothing or team jersey (provided by league)

• Flags (provided by league)

 • Cleats or athletic shoes

 • Water bottle

 • Mouthguard (required)

❓ What if my child misses a game or practice?

We understand that families have busy schedules. While we encourage consistent attendance, occasional absences are expected and okay. Coaches are informed and should be supportive.

❓ Can parents stay and watch?

Yes! Parents and family members are encouraged to attend games and cheer positively from the sidelines. We ask that all spectators help create a fun, respectful environment for players, coaches, and officials.

❓ How competitive is the league?

Desert Blaze Football balances competition and development. Games are exciting and competitive, but the focus remains on skill-building, confidence, and sportsmanship — especially at younger ages.

❓ Are there girls-only teams?

Yes. In addition to coed divisions, Desert Blaze proudly offers a dedicated Girls Flag Football division, creating a supportive and empowering space for female athletes to thrive.
